Why I love the USA

Friday, 4 July 2008 12:36 P GMT-05
  1. I was born here, it's the land of my birth.
  2. I have the freedom to remain here. I am not being pushed out by an opposing force with weapons. I am not being pushed out by my own government.
  3. The people are freaking generous! They give at the drop of a hat, for any reason, for any need.
  4. The land is beautiful. We have it all, from the cold chill of the north to the tropics of the south. From the mountains on the west coast to the mountains of the east coast, and the flat lands in between.
  5. We have the ability to vote for whom we please. Even when our choices are as bad as the current crop!
  6. We have the best health care in the world. Yes, there are some who have fallen through the cracks, but on average, those who need care have the means to get it.
  7. We have the ability and means to become what we want. No matter our start in life, no matter our obstacles, we can persevere and do it. We only need motivation and a chance.
  8. My children can get a great education. But I am also a necessary part of the equation. I must be involved and stay on top of them.
  9. I can worship the God I choose. And you can too, or not.
  10. We are a melting pot of some wonderful cultures and foods. We have all come together to make a mix of these cultures. We can learn so much from each other.

Some people mistake our national pride for some kind of elitism or snobbery. That isn't it at all. Having pride and love for one's county in no way means we don't appreciate someone else's country. It doesn't mean we feel other countries are inferior or less. It's just like our husbands, wives, children, our loved ones. Just because I love my husband and think he is the best, doesn't mean I think your husband is not. Would you really want me in LOVE with YOUR husband? Thought not.

I am so thankful that in 1775 America began it's bid for independence, and that we won it. And so I will celebrate that independence today. I will do it by having pride in my country and all that she has done. And I will also be thankful for the countries that have helped us along the way. I only hope that the people of countries, who have looked to us in the past, and seem to continue to look to us today for help and welfare, will decide to be happy for us, instead of bad mouthing us. Bad mouth your friends long enough, they decide to leave you in the dust.

Happy Fourth of July!!!

5 Things I like about Summer

  1. Our annual trip to Florida, usually 2 weeks between June/July.
  2. Swimming at Mom's pool. OK, I usually just get in to cool off.
  3. Going to Holiday World. A local amusement/splash park.
  4. Not having to get up early to get girls ready for school.
  5. At some point there are no sports activities to get girls to! From July to August we are FREE!!!
And right now we are enjoying #1. We have been swimming, eating and reconnecting with friends. What better way to spend a vacation!

Airports and Chris don't mix

Well, we are in Daytona. But the journey here was a long one. We left Evansville at 4:25, a little later than planned, but still in time to make it. Horrible weather through most of GA and parts of FL made for rough driving. Finally arrived in Orlando at 6:30, a little bit later than my sister's plane was supposed to arrive. Looking at the sky, it was iffy whether or not the planes were landing. Major lightning and rain was causing problems. Computers showed arrival at 6:37, hey, we are right in time. No plane. No sister. Phone call from her tells me she is in Tampa! Diverted due to storms. Finally, she arrived at 8:30. We waited for her luggage at carousel 14, for about 20 minutes. All the while trying to keep the car from being towed. We finally found her luggage on carousel 13! Seems with all the planes landing, in the small window of opportunity, they were running out of carousels. We finally got on the road to DB at 9:30, after stops for food and drinks. We got to bed about 11:30. I slept until 8:30!

Right now I am sitting, watching the FIFA final, having been at the beach since 10:00. Grabbed minimal groceries, had my daily beach walk, braved the COLD, hard waves of the Atlantic twice, swam in the pool twice and laid out a bit. I am bushed! Now I only have to wait for seafood out and more grocery shopping. As soon as I get done here I am grabbing the knitting and working on Beech Wood. I know, Icarus needs to be worked on, but I am trying hard to avoid it!

Catch you later.
